Murphy's concern sparked a partnership with Vicar Stephen Monsiegneur, leading to the organization of a community meeting and the development of WARM. This initiative is modeled after the successful Stable One program, which began in the Yarra Valley in 2017 and has since spread across Australia.
This winter, St Peter's Anglican Church, along with the Heidelberg Uniting Church and the Church of Christ parishes in Thornbury and Preston, will open their doors to homeless individuals, offering a safe haven and essential support. The program provides meals, bedding, and various services, including healthcare and hairdressing, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
The Banyule City Council has shown strong support for WARM, with deputy mayor Rick Garotti backing the initiative and allocating $30,000 for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The council is also trialing an outreach service through Merri Outreach Social Service (MOSS), marking a significant shift in their approach to addressing homelessness in the area.
The rise in homelessness in Victoria, particularly in the Banyule council area, is attributed to the high cost of living, the lack of affordable housing, and the strain on funding for community services.
