Not for the Natural Feel Seekers
Here's where it gets controversial. The Olympus 275's towering stack height might not be everyone's cup of tea. If you're after a natural, close-to-the-ground feel, this shoe might not deliver that experience. We found in our lab tests that the high stack puts you quite a distance from the trail, which could be a deal-breaker for some. In that case, the Altra Lone Peak 9 might be a better fit, and it's even more budget-friendly!
Not for Narrow Feet
And this is the part most people miss. The Altra Olympus 275's ultra-roomy fit might not suit everyone. Runners with narrower feet might find the massive toebox a bit loose and confidence-draining. If you're after a more snug fit, consider checking out the HOKA Mafate 5 or the Saucony Xodus Ultra 4 instead.
Cushioning and Shock Absorption
The zero-drop geometry of the Olympus 275 has a noticeable impact on shock absorption. Our lab tests revealed a solid 115 SA in the heel and an impressive 110 SA in the forefoot, favoring midfoot and forefoot strikers. However, we think Altra missed a chance to make it even lighter by opting for a supercritical EVA foam. The current compression-molded EVA is heavy and lacks bounce, scoring only 52.7% in our energy return test.
Heel and Forefoot Stack
Altra lists a 33 mm heel stack height, but our measurements show a slightly lower 30.8 mm. While the difference is minimal, it's still Altra's highest-stacked trail shoe. The forefoot measures an impressive 30.5 mm, providing ample cushioning and a noticeable difference on forefoot landings. This design choice makes the shoe feel incredibly stable and comfortable.
Drop and Midsole Softness
The Olympus 275 delivers on its promise of a true zero-drop setup, with a measured drop of just 0.3 mm. While it might not read exactly 0.0 mm, the minor difference is expected and doesn't impact the overall feel. The midsole, however, feels firm underfoot, which might not be everyone's preference. If you're after a plush sensation, this shoe might not provide that experience.
Size and Fit
The new MATRYX upper might have you wondering if it narrows the shoe, but we found the opposite. There's more room than ever, with a generous 100.1 mm width measurement. The toebox is spacious, offering plenty of straight-line space for your big toe and allowing for natural toe splay. Vertical space is also abundant, providing excellent room for toe movement.
Traction and Grip
The Vibram Megagrip outsole continues to impress, with a reliable 0.63 score in our lab tests. While it might not be the most cutting-edge, the combination of limited rubber coverage and exposed foam makes it a strong performer. The shallow 3.5 mm lugs are ideal for smooth trails and long runs but might limit performance on more technical terrain.
Flexibility and Weight
Altra has managed to keep the Olympus 275 flexible, scoring an impressive 13.9N in our bend test. The flex grooves in the outsole and midsole play a crucial role here, preserving a natural feel despite the tall stack. The weight reduction is a significant selling point, with the new MATRYX upper dropping the weight to a respectable 10.7 oz (303g).
Breathability and Comfort
The MATRYX upper is a standout feature, offering excellent ventilation while maintaining a lightweight feel. We rated it 4 out of 5 in our breathability test, making it a versatile option for trail running in various seasons. However, comfort might be a trade-off, as padding is minimal to achieve the weight reduction goal.
Stability and Durability
The Olympus 275 excels in stability, thanks to its wide footprint, tall midsole sidewalls, and firm foam. It's an excellent choice for flat or easy terrain. The heel design is unique, offering a soft, sock-like fit with minimal stiffness. This can be a benefit for runners who experience Achilles discomfort with more rigid heel counters. The MATRYX upper and Vibram Megagrip outsole deliver on durability, with excellent scores in our tests.
Price and Extras
The Altra Olympus 275 retails for $185, a small increase from the Olympus 6. We think it's a fair price for the upgrades, including the MATRYX upper and weight savings.
